While you\u2019ll need a dentist to actually treat your toothache, there are things that you can do to improve how you feel in the meantime. Here are a few home remedies to use for a toothache while you\u2019re waiting for your emergency appointment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Over-the-Counter Medication<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The first thing you can always try is OTC pain medication. It might not sound like much, but a little bit of ibuprofen can make a huge difference. Take whatever medication you would normally take for a headache; it should provide a little bit of relief until your appointment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Saltwater Rinse<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Saltwater has anti-inflammatory properties, and inflammation is one of the primary reasons why toothaches hurt as much as they do. Moreover, toothaches are often caused by an infection, and saltwater works fairly well as a disinfectant. If that\u2019s the case for you, saltwater could potentially ease your discomfort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Cloves<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Cloves\u2014more specifically, the oils in them\u2014are an effective home remedy for all kinds of pain and inflammation. Clove oil has notable antibacterial properties, which can effectively counter inflammation due to bacterial infection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can blob a bit of clove oil onto a cotton ball and hold it onto the affected tooth, or even gently chew up a whole clove if that\u2019s easier for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Ice<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you really feel the sting from inflammation, or if you\u2019re dealing with some swelling, an ice pack can be very effective. Hold one against your cheek or, if you\u2019re really struggling, place it directly onto the tooth until the pain subsides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can keep the compress in place for up to fifteen minutes at a time; any longer, and you could potentially do damage to your mouth and teeth.
